Abstract

Background and Objective : Trichomonas vaginalis infection is a common sexually transmitted protozoal infection and is associated with several adverse outcomes such as preterm labour, delivery of a low-birth weight infant, and facilitation of sexually transmission of human immunodeficiency virus. In Iran, the prevalence of trichomoniasis has been reported between 2 to 8%. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of this infection among women referred to a laboratory in Zanjan.

Material and Methods: In this Cross-sectional study, 328 women were selected via convenience sampling. Because of vaginal discharge, itching, burning and malodor, they were referred to a laboratory by a gynecologist. After preparing a demographical check list, the vaginal specimens were examined by wet smears for Trichomonas vaginalis, in 2010. To analyze the data, we use chi square and fisher exact test.

Results: The clients (54.43%) are 25-34 years old, homemaker(87%), illiterate or primary school education (48%).The prevalence of T. Vaginalis infection is 6.4%. there is no significant relationship between T.Vaginalis infection and factors like age, education level, marriage age, contraceptive method, occupation, dwelling place and number of labour.

Conclusion: In comparison with other studies, the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis in Zanjan is moderate. Because of co-existing with other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), we suggest conducting further studies about the prevalence of other STDs in Zanjan.

Abstract

Background and objective: Burnout is one of the key factors in reducing efficiency and‌ it causes loss‌ of manpower and physical complications‌.‌ Personality characteristics such as resiliency is abuffer against stressful events and work-related psychological problems such as burnout.‌ Given the important role of nurses in health-care‌‌system , this study ‌investigates The relationship between resiliency and burnout in nurses.
Material and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted on 304 nurses working in the hospitals in Tehran,‌ ‌‌2010.‌ The subjects were chosen by multi-stage cluster sampling.‌ The instruments were Maslach burnout inventory (MBI), Connor-Davidson Resiliency Scale (CD-RISC) and a demographic check-list. The data was analyzed by SPSS-18.
Results:‌‌ Overall, the findings showed high emotional exhaustion, (32.6% in frequency 9.9% in intensity),‌ ‌depersonalization (25.7% in frequency 18.1% in severity) and personal failure (42.1% in frequency ‌60.9% in severity). ‌The relationship between burnout and resiliency‌ was significant (0.01‌).
Conclusion: Given the resiliency is one of the predictors of burnout we recommend some workshops to increase the resiliency-related skills of the nurses.

Abstract

Background: Sex education is one of the challenging areas of educational systems that has always been accompanied by many problems due to some obstacles and constraints. This has led to occurrence of many behavioral problems and deviations. The aim of this study was to determine the sex education gaps in university curriculum from the students' perspective.

Methods: This was a descriptive-survey on students of universities in Kashan (15235 students), during academic year 2013-14. Overall, 220 students were enrolled in this study using stratified random sampling. Data collection tool was a questionnaire of sex education with 28 questions and six components (objectives, content, procedures, experiences and learning opportunities, cultural and advisory institutions’ performance and university atmosphere) using a 5-point Likert scale. The content validity was confirmed by experts. The reliability was estimated as 0.89 using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the obtained data.

Results: The mean level of sex education gaps (3.97±0.56) in the university curriculum was above the average (3). The highest mean was related to the component of procedures (4.1±0.63) and experiences and learning opportunities (4.1±1.01).

Conclusion: The results showed that the average level of gaps in sex education in the university curriculum is higher than the assumed mean level. The gaps are present in all components of objectives, content, procedures, experiences and learning opportunities, cultural and advisory institutions’ performance and the university atmosphere.

Abstract

Background: Retaining skilled nurses is paramount in providing quality nursing care for patients and thus improving their satisfaction. This study aimed to determine the intention to stay (ITS) in the profession of nurses and its related factors.
Methods: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted on 263 nurses working in teaching hospitals affiliated with Zanjan University of Medical Sciences, Iran, from September 2020 to February 2021. Participants were selected by simple randomization. A researcher-made ITS questionnaire was used to collect data, which were then analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation via SPSS version 16.
Results: The findings revealed that 109 participants (41.45%) of the nurses intended to stay in their profession. The total mean ± SD score of ITS for the nursing profession was 60.44±12.39 out of 100. From the participants' perspective, 5 factors of high responsibility and commitment (86.01±13.71), professional competence (77.95±13.66), feeling useful in nursing (77.79±18.23), the importance of being employed for me (74.83±20.01), and the possibility of learning skills and acquiring new information by continuing nursing (74.30±18.22) had the highest average score. There was a statistically significant relationship between ITS and the demographic variables of education level, job position, marital status, working shift, age, and the number of children of participants (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The frequency of nurses with ITS in the profession is a cause of concern, sounding the alarm for the Iranian nursing system. The findings of this study could be useful for health care policymakers to increase nurses' intention to stay in the profession and, as a result, improve retention rates.

Abstract

Background: Domestic violence is a pervasive issue characterized by a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviors within an intimate relationship. While traditional gendered models often portray males as perpetrators and females as victims, this perspective oversimplifies the complex reality of intimate partner violence (IPV). Research indicates that domestic violence can affect individuals of any gender. Therefore, this study aims to examine domestic violence as it is experienced by both males and females.
Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated 240 cohabiting couples in Gorgan, northern Iran, in 2022. The researchers used a simple random sampling method, facilitated by R software (version 4.4.2) and the national electronic health information system, to identify eligible participants. Participants included females aged 20–49 and their husbands, all of whom had been married for at least two years. Data were collected via the online, self-administered Persian version of the Conflict Tactics Scale 2 (CTS2), which measures the following subscales of conflict: Psychological aggression, physical assault, sexual coercion, and injury. Data analysis included descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and qualitative statistics (frequency and percentage). The Kruskal-Wallis test was employed to compare mean scores between groups, with statistical significance set at P < 0.05.
Results: This study's findings revealed that 52.8% of couples (95% confidence interval [CI]: 40.72–58.45) experienced domestic violence. The research further specified the prevalence of various forms of violence as follows: Bilateral violence: 25% (95% CI: 19.48–30.52), male-to-female partner violence (MFPV): 19.58% (95% CI: 14.53–26.64), and female-to-male violence (FMPV): 7.5% (95% CI: 4.14–10.86). The most frequently reported types of abuse were psychological aggression (male: 5.0 ± 3.48; female: 5.07 ± 3.67) and sexual coercion (male: 2.71 ± 1.8; female: 2.93 ± 2.42).
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that IPV can be perpetrated by any individual within a relationship, regardless of gender. Consequently, educational initiatives and screening programs should be developed to include both members of a couple, instead of being focused on a single individual. These findings can be utilized by healthcare professionals to develop more comprehensive prevention strategies and to enhance the effectiveness of existing screening protocols for IPV.
